Canada Greener Home - Federal Grant

Congratulations, your monthly bill is lower than the typical Canadian. But not to worry! Going solar still has many benefits. You could consider an off-grid system with battery back up to cover all your energy needs and gain independence from utility companies. Or a small grid-tied system to reduce your monthly bill. Whether off-grid or grid-tied, a solar system will increase your property value, saving you money. And you’ll be saving the environment for generations to come!
Based on your bill size, which is about average for a Canadian homeowner, solar is a great option for you! Setting up a two-way net metering system and a medium solar array is the optimal set up for you. It allows you to generate as much energy from solar as possible, while using the electric utility as an energy bank: The excess electricity generated is sent back to the grid (typically in summer months) or withdrawn from your solar bank in winter months when needed. Plus, solar increases your property value, saving you even more! So, if you’d like to really lower your utility bills, while helping to save the planet, solar might be right for you.

Net Metering and Net Billing:

The net metering program or NetBilling is the most important part and a standard financial incentive program for social power. This is the policy that enables businesses and homeowners to cancel out their electricity bills by supplying solar-generated electricity to their utility company.

The program applies to residential, agricultural and commercial deployments of solar power systems with capacities up to 100kW. Owners of such systems can send electricity to the electrical grid from their solar power system. All electricity generated is banked and applied to the current month’s electricity consumption, so if you produce more than you use, you end up with a bill of zero.

Under the program, unused electricity can be carried forward as a credit from month-to-month but must be used up by an anniversary date set by your local hydro provider, from your commencement in the program, at which time your credit will reset to zero.

Make sure to contact your local utility to get specifics and availability on net metering for your area.
